Common Questions About Master Spas Owner’s Manuals

What does the FLO error code mean on a Master Spas hot tub?

FLO (also shown as FL1 or FL2 on some Balboa systems) means the flow switch is not detecting adequate water flow through the heater. Common causes are a dirty filter cartridge restricting flow, closed jets or diverter valves, low water level, or a failing circulation pump. Start by rinsing the filter. If FLO clears after a filter rinse, clean or replace the filter before the next use. If FLO persists with a fresh filter and correct water level, the circulation pump or flow switch may need inspection.

What does the OH error code mean on a Master Spas hot tub?

OH means the water temperature has exceeded the high-limit sensor threshold, typically 108F to 112F depending on the model. Turn off the spa, remove the cover to release heat, and allow the water to cool before restarting. If OH appears repeatedly, verify the temperature set point is not above 104F and that the high-limit sensor is reading correctly. A failing sensor can trigger OH even when the actual water temperature is normal.

What are the recommended water chemistry ranges for Master Spas?

Target ranges for all Master Spas models: pH 7.4 to 7.6; total alkalinity 80 to 120 ppm; free chlorine 1 to 3 ppm using Master Clear di-chlor granules; calcium hardness 150 to 200 ppm; dissolved metals below 0.2 ppm. Test weekly. Maintaining these ranges protects the heater element, plumbing seals, and EcoPur filter components from scaling and corrosion.

How often should I replace the EcoPur Charge filter?

Replace the inner mineral element (the core inside the filter housing) every 6 months. Replace the outer mechanical filter cartridge every 12 months, or sooner if flow noticeably drops or the cartridge shows heavy scaling that does not rinse out. Running with a clogged mechanical cartridge stresses the circulation pump and can trigger FLO errors.

What size circuit breaker does my Master Spas hot tub need?

Most 240V Master Spas hot tubs require a 50A or 60A GFCI breaker. The exact requirement is printed on the data plate inside the equipment bay, typically near the control pack. Swim spas (H2X and Michael Phelps models) often require two separate 60A GFCI circuits because of dual-zone heaters and the propulsion motor. Do not rely on the model name alone; check the data plate for your specific unit before wiring.

How do I winterize my Master Spas hot tub?

Winterization steps: (1) Turn off power at the breaker. (2) Drain the spa completely using the drain valve at the equipment bay. (3) Use a shop vac or low-pressure air to remove remaining water from jets and plumbing lines. (4) Remove the filter cartridge, rinse it, and store it indoors. (5) Leave cabinet vents slightly open for air circulation. (6) In freeze-risk climates, add non-toxic spa antifreeze to any lines where water may remain. Never use automotive antifreeze.
